Called the greatest shock in a generation or more by political observers, Scott Brown's emphatic victory over Democrat Martha Coakley signalled major political problems for the president's party later in the year when House of Representatives, Senate and gubernatorial candidates will re-contest their seats.

With three quarters of the state's precincts reporting and Mr Brown leading by 53 per cent to 46, Ms Coakley conceded the race.
