Little Dick Durbin: Of course premiums will still go up with ObamaCare

Not exactly a shocker, but Dick Durbin gives the nuanced explanation that they're looking to slow down the rate of increases, not stop increases altogether. Unfortunately, that misrepresents what the CBO has already said about premiums under ObamaCare — and ignores what has already happened to premiums without it:

President Obama, March 8, 2010:

“Our cost-cutting measures mirror most of the proposals in the current Senate bill, which reduces most people’s premiums.”

Someone's lying; or doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

Except for the 100% increase for those of us (me) that don't have/want insurance.

If you don't mind my asking, how do you pay for medical costs?

$60 office fee for my MD general practitioner

$100 yearly girly-stuff exam

$4 most Rx's (don't take a whole lot)

I was pretty sick one year and spent $800 in 2 visits for the tests, but I had contracted a parasite on a mission trip and forgot to tell him I had been out of the country (doh!). I call that a 'stupid tax'. Would have been $60/$20 if I would have helped my own cause.

He meant to say he did not wish it to raise most people's premiums, but of course we live in reality and the professor lives in theory! So was he really lying or just misspoke? hmmm

ok. i've had an idea.

I'll pay for healthcare if we

1. make cigarettes/tobacco illegal

2. helmet laws for all motorcyclists

3. junk/fast food abolished

4. enforce a strict diet/exercise program to all citizens

5. 2 child limit per woman

6. sex is illegal prior to obtaining a clean bill of health (STD's) for everyone

What if we just put a $1 federal tax on bottled water...people will still buy it anyway.

And what about a TV tax....monitor all Americans and tax them $1 for every hour they sit in front of the TV.

There should be a $1 per ounce tax on tofu......anybody that eats that awful tasting stuff deserves to be taxed for it.

A $1 tax on politicians for every lie they tell......should pay for health care by itself.

You've got the real solution to health care, imho! High deductible policies with HSA. Pay cash for most stuff and use insurance for catastrophes. Medical costs spent by individuals would decline and so would premiums.

Of course, I'm using common sense and that would never be acceptable to anyone in Washington, DC.

I definitely don't support the current Healthcare Reform Bill that may be passed, but for different reasons that most Republicons.

I have written all of my Senators not to support a Bill without a Public Option, a single-payer system, and extensive regulation.

Unfortunately, President Obama has wasted tremendous political capital by not fighting for these American Rights from the outset.

Other than the General Welfare Clause, where are these 'rights' enumerated?

That's why they have to pass the bill before people know what's in it.

Maybe that explains Pelosi's comment about passing the bill so we can find out what's in it.

Well, no surprise here. Nothing good ever comes from giving someone a blank check signed by you when the bank account is empty & you're losing your house & unemployment is running out & the local homeless shelter is full.

Take a look at this, it will make you dizzy......all the wrong numbers going up.

Notice there have been 857,434 foreclosures in 2010 already, and it's only March 10th.

A million and a half Americans have already filed bankruptcy this year.

And notice the difference between the "Official Unemployed" and "Actual Unemployed". 26 Billion Americans are out of work!

$107 Trillion Dollars in "Unfunded Liabilities".............and what is our government doing? Spending all their time bribing and paying off congressmen for their vote on health care. WE ARE DOOMED!

That's a pretty mean feat since the U.S. population is 308 million.

I meant Million...sorry for the mistake. I think I've been listening to politicians talk about spending so much that I've got Billions stuck in my brain.

Of course health insurance will cost more. No insurance company can afford to eliminate all pre-existing condition clauses, eliminate lifetime maximums, and provide for children until the age of 26 (why not age 45?). What bothers me the most is that the Congressional Budget Office says that premiums for most people will not be affected. I know they are supposed to be the trusted source for cost estimates for whoever is in power, but its statement about not causing health insurance to increase completely destroys any credibility they might have.
