The First Smoker and his wife: The do-as-I-say (not as I do) duo

Thomas Lifson
The First Smoker and his wife don't always follow their own advice on living healthy to reduce the burden on ObamaCare finances. On yet another long weekend away from the White House, the First Couple indulged in ultra-unhealthy North Carolina barbecue. Jennifer Fermino of the New York Post writes:

Making a weekend getaway to North Carolina, the fitness-fanatical First Lady -- who planted a garden at the White House to promote healthy eating and leads a campaign to fight childhood obesity -- and President Obama immediately hit a barbecue joint.

The Grim Creeper

"When your parents tell you to eat your broccoli, you don't know yet whether you're going to like it or not: you've got to try it," he said, with hearty agreement from Mrs. Obama, who shouted "just try it!"

I wonder what we should do if our parents tell us to have a plate of ribs and smoke a Marlboro afterward...

I am so tired of being preached to by hypocrites.

That's funny, but I don't blame the Obamas for their choice. When I find great BBQ, the last darned thing I want to do is eat healthy--so I'm gonna cut 'em some slack. :D

Now, if I were told to eat a plate of ribs, I'd do so happily (I love ribs!). As for the Marlboros--thanks, but I quit, so I shall pass on that stinky habit. :D

Although I'm with ya in your ultimate point: hypocrisy is rampant everywhere. People should just let people live--however they might want to live their lives, as long as they're not breaking the law or trampling on someone else's rights.

You do realize these are the same people who want to regulate salt via the FDA? I'm all for live and let live, but these people are attacking our right to do the same via health care reform. They tell us how to reduce our carbon footprint and proceed to fly at least two jets wherever they go. I, for one, won't cut the Obamas one iota of slack.

Yeah, funny thing is, that doesn't bother me too much... I don't mind living without salt--I'm one of those weird people who can eat an egg without adding any salt; it grosses everyone I know entirely! ;0

Now, take away my sugar, and we're gonna have a major stink! :D

Jack: i said I don't mind doing without salt. "I"--I am speaking solely for myself.

As for anyone else who cares that much for salt, I'll defend your right to gorge yourself on it--I am all for personal preference. I don't care for government telling me what I can and cannot eat (gorge on) if that's my choice.

Is salt banned? Is it against the law to buy salt and add it to our food if we choose?

Now, take away my sugar, and we're gonna have a major stink!

Sugar is also another thing you can purchase and add to your food or drinks if you choose.

Also didn't the FDA ban Red Dye No. 4 some years back? This is one screwed up country that want's to protect is citizens from cancer and other major or deadly illnesses. /sarc/

http://www.ask.com/wiki/Food_coloring

"Seven dyes were initially approved under the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, but several have been delisted and replacements have been found."

OK, I'll bite on this one, Creeper. Do YOU or the people at American Thinker know what the President and his family eat on a daily basis?..... huh...?.... no, right? How exactly is this being a case of do as I say when you don't know what their diet consists of? It was ONE meal---ONE, and the people (if you can call them that) over at American Thinker (oxymoron) want to attack him?

I try to eat healthy. I count my calories, I stay away from soft drinks (except when there's a party because I don't drink) and I exercise daily by walking every evening. I try to teach my girls how to eat healthy because of my family's history when it comes to health. We do eat out, but it's very rare. When I eat out I will eat a burger with fries and a soft drink because let's face it, I am human! So what the people at American Thinker (LMAO every time I type that) are saying that it's not okay for the President to indulge himself every once in a while?! I mean, I look at them and they don't quite look obese to me which leads me to believe that they probably do eat healthy. No it's no secret that you despise our president and seed ANY article that will put him in a bad light. Doesn't even matter if it's a petty article such as this one. You always seem to contort the issue and make it about Obama taking our freeedoms, yadda, yadda, yadda.... Always the same thing. Well I guess when you have nothing valid to complain about you'll complain anyway, right?

The salt regulation has gone on a lot longer than you might believe. Like as far back as 1998. It's not new, and if you don't think Americans have way too much salt in their diet than you're being obtuse.

Haven't you ever changed a recipie to suit your tastes or diet? Most people have no idea how much salt they actually consume. Challange- keep track of your salt intake for one week. Read every package (pay attention to serving size), go to restaurant websites when you eat out. Write it down. I bet it's a lot higher than you think it is.

Why is there salt in processed food? Is it for flavor or is it for preservation?

Salt (sodium chloride) helps prevent spoiling by drawing moisture out of food, so bacteria can't grow. Salt also kills existing bacteria that might cause spoiling.

So what do we use to preserve the food if we take salt out of everything?

I realize salt is not the only way to preserve food but what do we use instead of salt? Some other chemical that's equally bad for us?

Jixer-

Processed food is the problem. How many people cook anymore. I mean REALLY cook. Not open up some pack of rice and sauce and throw it in a pot. By cooking from scratch your leaving out all those chemicals. Instead of buying processed turkey lunch meat. Roast a turkey breast on the weekend and put that in your sandwiches. It's healthier and it tastes a lot better too.

You can substitute it with a lower sodium salt and in many recipes you can simply leave it out. You'll be surprised how quickly you can remove and tolerate no or very little salt in your diet. Actually you'll find that food tastes a lot better without it.

It's true that a lot of canned food is preserved with salt and the alternative is just as bad if not worse. What I did is purchased more frozen food instead of canned. You can also use fresh items rather than canned. Personally I don't use a lot of canned food, I got really grossed out by the Spaghetti-O's I had to cook for my little brother when we were kids.

I remember someone on television years ago saying and I paraphrase, "read the ingredients the label, if you can't pronouns any of the items don't eat it". It's a good rule to live by, but often unattainable, it's best to attempt lowing the amount of food you eat that's been preserved, fresh is best.

My gym teacher in high school was seriously overweight. I can still remember the way his whistle would sit on top of his belly. Life is full of contradictions like this. You shouldn't let them bother you so much. I know you are worried about the president's health (you are a patriot). I don't think eating a plate of ribs will affect their over all health. It would be funny if you were really fat and that's why it upsets you. Are you?

Wow , what an obsession. PRESIDENT Obama and his wife also work out regularly unlike most people which is why neither is overweight , and can afford to indulge once in a while. One thing is that the President is never seen in public smoking and very few photos exist of him engaging in the habit.

As far as his smoking habit ? His choice , he's not alone.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081208070453AAIVgM4

Reagan , 3 packs a day at one time , made a lot of money making commercials for Chesterfield Kings.

George W. Bush a former smoker.
Dwight David Eisenhower , JFK , Lyndon Johnson , Pat Nixon , Jackie Kennedy William Howard Taft , and FDR were all heavy smokers. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a chain smoker and this may have been the reason he was killed , stepping out on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel to sneak a puff , something that was hidden from the public because of his ministry and the effect this knowledge would have on those who followed him .

No to mention a HUGE jar of Jelly Belly's on his desk at all times.

Yes...when you quit there's always a substitute "addiction". Reagan's substitute was Jelly Bellys, a friend of mine's is pretzels, 12-step programs (AA, NA, etc) espouse meetings as a substitute, some use activities such as a hobby or a "cause". And of course, everyone knows someone that has substituted with food. Often those substitutes become as strong as the original addiction, or even stronger to the point of obsession, because they don't actually "fill the need"; physically, they don't trigger the same receptors in the brain. It can chemically affect people's reasoning capacities.

I have to wonder when I read some of the distorted thinking on NV if the ridiculous hostility that is so apparent is a result of substituting. What was your addiction, Grim?

I know much more than you appear to.

I wont even get into the details of how much I do know about him ( a Thesis in Theology School ) , but his smoking and womanizing was as legendary as his preaching prowess.

Martin Luther King Jr National Historic Site ... Dr. King was a smoker. 27. Did Mrs. King work? Mrs. King retired as president of the King ..

I strongly suggest you read the link , as you're arguing over something that has already been established.

http://www.nps.gov/malu/faq_dr_martin_luther_king_jr.htm

Your silly rant shows you know NOTHING about the black church where smokers and drinkers , especially in the 1960's were preached to and told they were going to hell , dancing was considered a sin , and single mothers were banned from some churches.

As a black former Baptist Clergy myself who did quite a few studies on Dr. King , I suggest you either put up or shut up as history proves you're not only wrong , instinct tells me that you're trying to pick a bone with no tools.

What's your premise for your argument ? Research , easily done on the internet shows he in fact was a smoker , so what is your other point of contention ? Ever visit a Black Southern Baptist Church during the 50's and 60's fire and brimstone periods when smoking was considered a sure road to hell ?

I don't like debating with people who have no idea what they are talking about and want to argue just for the sake of arguing even when proven wrong.

Well, since those who have opposed Obama from Day One are also the same people promoting the idea that we Liberals consider him The Messiah, they need to take each and every opportunity to point out that our (supposed) idol has feet of clay. After all, there is absolutely nothing that Obama can do that is correct and off limits to ridicule and denigration. Otherwise, they'd have to engage in a genuine debate and offer meaningful proposals to address national issues.

I try to eat healthy since finding I had a high cholesterol problem last Fall. But you know what, every once in a while, I think it's okay to enjoy some BBQ or whatever else you like, sometimes you need to enjoy yourself...as long as it's not an everyday thing...which, of course, is not being healthy minded.

You folks are totally missing the point. These people are preaching to us, indoctrinating our children, and seeking to take active control over the things we eat. This is like a pedophile priest telling us all to be moral and chaste, while he's diddling altar boys. Wake up, people!

Jack Flash, sometimes when we're young -- just sometimes, mind you, and I'm sure you never did anything foolish when you were young -- sometimes we try something such as cigarettes, then find we're hooked, then decide it was a BIG mistake. From that experience comes our advice to, "Don't do as I did."

As for trying to control every aspect of what Americans eat, it isn't going to happen. Human nature being what it is, we always find ways to obtain the forbidden fruit. Furthermore, lobbyists for the corporations that make Cheetos, Frosted Flakes, Twinkies, et al., are powerful enough that no meaningful reform is going to take place. It will all come down to individual choice, so quit getting your knickers in a twist.

P.S. And I do like Cheetos, Frosted Flakes and Twinkies, but I seldom choose to eat them.

I don't give a @!$%# what the president eats or smokes, but in turn, he better not tell me what I should or shouldn't put in my body. Just wait until all their taxes and regulations affect you, pissedoffbobm then maybe you'll sing a different tune.

Like it or not, obesity in America is a problem. However, it would be against our constitutional rights for the government to directly tell us what to eat or what to not eat. That is why they can legally must go at it more passively, by taxing foods higher that have a higher percentage of saturated fat content, as well as smokes. I don't agree with it, but it is a political tactic that is currently considered constitutional. However, I will give him the fact that he is a healthy guy, he seems to work out enough to at least give the appearance of being physically fit. Asking the guy to eat like he is on "The Biggest Loser" seems a bit extreme, and this is coming from a Republican. To me, hypocricy would be if he was 450 pounds and passing these reforms. However, he is in better shape than probably a majority of Americans.

I wonder what we should do if our parents tell us to have a plate of ribs and smoke a Marlboro afterward...

The Obama family are not your parents. Get over it.

Public figures and regular people say things like this all the time. Everyone knows smoking is not healthy and BBQ may not the healthiest food choice. Everyone obviously has a choice about whether to listen.

I'm sure plenty of people are tired of having the far Right preach to them about the evils of Obama.

I heard Obama is going to try to pack the Supreme Court with closet smokers and that HCR bill has a must-eat bbq pork barrel amendment that no one has ever read. Gosh, I heard he and Michele drank sweet tea with their bbq brisket on their trip just to thumb their noses at the TEA Party. Heaven help us. Thank Grim Creeper for alerting us to the hypocrisy; now I must exercise and feast on kale.

Karl Marx never quit working on his economic theory books to start earning money. The prominent philosopher once claimed that the amount of money he received for the first volume of his monumental "Capital" never paid even for the cigars he smoked when working on it. Luckily, Karl Marx had a plenty of rich and helpful friends to support him.

Jack,

This is just plain weird; the parallels are just amazing. Thanks for connecting Obama and Karl. This has been the only valid connection made yet.

I can just see Obama, energy fueled by many a cigarette hanging loosely from his lips, staying up real late to create a blue print for allowing an invasion of commies to take away our arms (but curiously leaving us with legs), dispense tons of condoms to children, and hand out free pork to everyone that isn't a Christian. Ever see 'Red Dawn', that IS what I am talking about, oh yes indeed. I am going to buy some solar panels and seeds TODAY! This shid is scary.

Typical right wing crap. You can lead a healthy eating lifestyle and still indulge in fast food or BBQ once in a while. The problem is when people make sugary and fatty foods the lifestyle.

Not exactly rocket science, but considering the lack of objective reasoning from the opposition, perhaps it is.

Regarding smoking, it's an addiction that he has acknowledged and is working to rectify. Because despite all of your attempts to portray him as a self-described Messiah, he is the first to remind us all that he is only human.

All in all, another example of the Creeper with far too much time on his hands.

Exactly, SG. No dietician, no matter how hardcore, would tell you to permanently abstain from all unhealthy foods at all times for the rest of your life. The reason they don't tell you this is simple: it's an impossible goal, and it will make the crash that much harder when you fail.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is about generally eating right, exercising, and keeping indulgence to a minimum. As long as someone is maintaining their healthy eating practices regularly and hitting the gym a bit more when they indulge, there's nothing wrong.

ThreeCents has it. After attempting to protray this President in every imaginable way to denounce him, they have resorted to Ribs and the occasional smoke.

I believe most knew he smokes, and that he does (and I suppose his wife as well) indulge, but looking at them both, they appear to be healthy 40 year-olds.

As for the FDA regulating whats in food - predominately processed food - there is empirical evidence that these processed foods contain an over-abundance of salt and sugar, and that limiting their amounts would have a positive impact. It also would reduce the additive aspects of them. However, the best method to reduce child obesity is by the parents.

Some of us have better use of our time on the vine, then filtering through all the nonsense - both seeded articles and the comments.

This is just ridiculous. Firstly, who are ANY of you to judge? You can be a healthy person and still indulge once in a while, it's all about not depriving yourself of foods you like but at the same time keeping them in moderation and making smart choices. I hope all of you who like to point the finger and throw around this holier than thou bull@!$%# have a clean slate. This degree of nit picking is absurd.

Oh JESUS H. CHRIST!!!

This is ALL you've got left, huh? A BBQ dinner? Even the healthiest people enjoy a plate of some high fat, high calorie foods every once in a while. Last I recalled, they urged people to make healthier choices, and for children to enjoy healthier meals, but they did NOT say "and you can never eat BBQ or cake or ice cream or bacon again".

You people are confusing a healthier lifestyle with a lifestyle with NO bad foods ever. If you balance your meals and exercise, enjoy a plate of ribs every once in a while. They're DELICIOUS!! But dont make high fat meals the norm. Throw in some lean mats, tasty veggies, and fresh fruits. One plate of ribs every once in a while, especially while on VACATION, isnt going to kill you.

I agree. Just because they went out for barbecue this one time doesn't mean they eat it all the time.

What they want to communicate is a sense of thought in terms of a long-term diet - think about the meats, drinks, etc that you are consuming and the exercise that you get. Deviating from a normal schedule every once and a while doesn't affect that schedule.

News flash, Jack - I admire Obama, yet I'm not interested in government imposing its will regarding what we consume. Does that blow up your world view or what?

Encouraging healthy behavior is something entirely different.

Ever buy a life insurance policy? If you smoke, you pay a higher price. That's not Obama at work, Jack. That's private business.

I asked, "What about booze?" not because I believe in prohibition, but because I thought Al's suggestion about banning tobacco was not a good answer. It would just open up a whole new market for smuggling and black market butts.

Well said Ellen, but, I would be interested to know how you feel about the decision by Obama to up the level of troops in Afghanistan.

In my opinion, we have more important things to worry about than the President's dietary lapses.

Of course Bush left us with a fiscal hand grenade plated firmly up the national anus, but doesn't it concern you that Obama has pulled the pin as well?

Obama seems to have sold out to the military-industrial-complex, and, THIS is a big deal, given the level of federal debt, and the high cost of being an unwanted empire.

It's been a while since I checked in on NewsVine, but, I can see that the ongoing feud between the left and the right is alive and sickeningly well.

The widening rift between the two opposing political parties in our country, amidst the back-drop of high unemployment and the never-ending "war on terror", are stark reminders that the UnTied States of Amerika is the New Rome.

While it is true that Obama is probably the smartest and nicest Emperor we have had in a long time, I would still argue that we need to get the hell out of Iraq AND Afghanistan and start focusing on some real hope and change AT HOME, for a change!
